Dempo Shipbuilding & Engineering Pvt. Ltd. operates two shipyards in Goa on India's west coast — one at Bainguinim on the Mandovi river and one at Undir, Ponda on the Zuari river — building and repairing inland, coastal and sea-going vessels. Work covers new construction of vessels up to 4500 DWT including tugs, barges, dredgers, ferries, passenger and patrol craft, plus ship repairs up to 3500 DWT, refits, conversions and modernisation. The yard is registered with the Indian Coast Guard (Coast Guard Region West) for refit of IB/IC class ships and is certified to ISO 9001:2015 by the Indian Register Quality System. Part of the Dempo Group, the business traces its origins to a 1957 barge maintenance workshop and is headquartered at Panaji, Goa.

Dempo Shipbuilding & Engineering Pvt. Ltd. is a Goa-based shipbuilder and ship repairer operating two yards a few kilometres upstream from the Arabian Sea on India's west coast. Part of the Dempo Group, whose activities began in 1941, the shipbuilding business grew from a 1957 barge maintenance workshop in Vasco da Gama, followed by the acquisition of the Bainguinim yard in 1974 and the establishment of the Undir yard in 2004. The company is certified by the Indian Register Quality System to ISO 9001:2015 for its quality management systems, with accreditation by the RvA (Dutch Accreditation Council) and NABCB, and runs its operations in an ERP environment.

Facilities

Bainguinim Yard (Mandovi river, Old Goa)

  • Slipway 120 x 20 m with 20-tonne hydraulic winch; vessels of about 82 m length constructible
  • Two dry docks, each 90 x 18 m
  • Two outfitting quays (120 m and 80 m)
  • Full machine shop for stern gear, rudder gear and deck machinery; mechanical, electrical and steel workshops
  • Covered and open fabrication bay, monthly throughput over 150 tons

Undir Yard (Zuari river, Ponda)

  • Side launching bays of 110 m and 80 m; vessels up to 125 m long and 18 m wide
  • One 120 m outfitting quay; machining and design support from the Old Goa yard
  • Covered and open fabrication bay, monthly throughput over 150 tons

Both yards

  • Air plasma CNC cutting (plates up to 3.0 m wide) with gas torch and nesting software
  • Blasting and airless spray machines; submerged arc, CO2 and inverter welding
  • 325 KVA standby generators
