Astilleros de Santander, S.A.U. (ASTANDER) is a Spanish shipyard in El Astillero, Cantabria, on the Bay of Biscay, founded in 1872 and specialising in ship repairs, conversions and upgrades. Its facilities include two drydocks (the larger measuring 230 m and rated at 55,000 DWT), a 1,200 t slipway, piers and quays, plus mechanical, steelwork, pipework and electrical workshops and an in-house design and engineering department offering turn-key conversion and retrofit solutions, including scrubber installations. The yard is owned by the ITALMAR group and operates alongside sister yard Astilleros de Canarias S.A. (ASTICAN), and is represented by agents in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas. Its management systems are approved by LRQA to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018, with an RD&i system certified by AENOR to UNE 166002:2014.

Founded in 1872 as a forge by Mr. Bernardo Lavín, ASTANDER carried out its first afloat repair in 1913, inaugurated its first drydock in 1922 and built its first ship in 1930. State-owned from 1965 as part of the Astilleros Españoles S.A. Group, the yard was acquired in full by the private ITALMAR group at the end of 1999. With more than 140 years of experience in building, conversion and ship repair, it operates alongside group sister yard Astilleros de Canarias S.A. (ASTICAN) and is supported by a network of agents across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Asia.

  • Drydock No. 2: 230 m x 34 m, 55,000 DWT, 8.5 m draft, cranes 200 t + 40 t + 15 t, with two thruster pits (aft 21.5 x 7 x 1.5 m; fwd 15 x 10.5 x 1.5 m)
  • Drydock No. 1: 160 m x 23.8 m, 16,000 DWT, 5.5 m draft, 2 x 25 t cranes
  • Slipway: 83 m x 14.1 m, 1,200 t lifting capacity
  • North & South piers: 2 x 180 m, 6.5 m draft; Quays 3 & 4: 2 x 160 m, 4.5 m draft
  • Workshops: mechanical 2,000 m², steelwork 3,000 m² (Cadmatic 3D modelling, plasma and CNC flame cutting), pipework 1,000 m², electrical
  • 5,000 m² storage area, plus shipowner locker room and catering
