AB Gotenius Varv & Mekaniska Verkstad

AB Gotenius Varv & Mekaniska Verkstad is a privately owned full-service ship repair yard on Ringön in the inner harbour of Gothenburg, Sweden, operating since the yard moved to its present site in 1950. The business is built around two floating docks and a slipway, drydocking well over 100 vessels a year at lengths up to 110 metres, and covers hull, piping, electrical and machinery work as well as testing and classification tasks. Customers include coastal shipping owners in the Nordic countries and Germany, operators of special-purpose tonnage such as archipelago and passenger vessels, tugs, dredgers, the Transport Administration's road ferries and the Swedish Maritime Administration's fleet. The yard has also developed a specialism in historic and museum ships, including riveted hull plating work, with projects such as the barque Viking, the steamer Bohuslän and the East Indiaman Götheborg.

Founded by Vilhelm Gotenius and Rolf Moberg at Färjenäs and relocated to Ringön in Gothenburg's inner harbour in 1950, Gotenius Varv has developed over more than sixty years into one of Sweden's leading repair yards for coasters, special-purpose vessels and vintage ships. The yard has built and lengthened ships in the past but now concentrates on repair, maintenance and conversion work. It describes itself as a private full-service yard with a flat organisation and short decision paths, and accepts both large projects and smaller jobs, as well as offering harbour services.

Services

Hull work: steel, aluminium and stainless sheet and welding; piping in all materials; sanitary and equipment installations; cleaning, blasting and painting; wood and interior work
Electrical: repair and testing of electrical equipment, insulation measurement, fault finding, refurbishment of electric motors and generators, installation of electrical systems and control systems
Machinery: classification and repair of machinery, propeller repairs, shaft drawing, pump overhauls, service and repair of high- and medium-speed diesels, engine and pump installation, manufacture of propeller shafts and rudder posts, turning, milling and drilling
Testing and classification: heeling tests with displacement determination, boom and rig testing, thickness measurement
Dock and quay services: electricity, water and fire line connections, waste handling, heavy transport within the yard, crane work, scaffolding
