CARENA (Compagnie Abidjanaise de Réparation Navale et de travaux industriels) is a ship repair and industrial works yard in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, founded in 1953 and describing itself as the largest yard in West Africa. Its in-house workshops cover hull treatment and painting, boilerworking and welding, piping, on-board mechanics, machine tools, electrical work, joinery, industrial cleaning and life-raft servicing, supported by floating docks acquired in 1972 (2,000 t) and 1983 (10,000 t). The yard operates an integrated Quality, Health, Safety and Environment management system and has held ISPS code certification since July 2004. It is owned 50/50 by AGL, Africa Global Logistics (an MSC subsidiary) and SOFIA.

CARENA, the Compagnie Abidjanaise de Réparation Navale et de travaux industriels, was formed on 30 July 1953 from the merger of the naval activities of ACMA and ACCI, originally covering newbuilding of vessels and barges as well as ship repair. Based on its original site in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, it has expanded its infrastructure over the decades and positions itself as the largest yard in West Africa. Shareholders today are AGL, Africa Global Logistics (an MSC subsidiary) and SOFIA, each holding 50%.

Services

Hull treatment and painting: anticorrosion and antifouling on hulls, superstructures, decks, ballast tanks, fresh water tanks and fish holds; abrasive blasting and hydroblasting, airless spray application (epoxy, alkyd, resin, conventional and silicone antifouling) using Sigma/PPG, Hempel, International Paint and Jotun products
Boilerworking and welding, in workshop and on board
On-board mechanics: diesel engine overhaul, cylinder liner de-glazing up to 640 mm, valve grinding, propulsion system and stern tube sealing work, laser shaft alignment
Machine tools: manufacture and repair of mechanical parts, including oil pipe threading
Piping fabrication and repair, valve reconditioning with test-bench tightness testing, propeller reconditioning
Electrical: electromechanical equipment maintenance, rewinding, switchboard assembly, quayside 50 Hz and 60 Hz shore power
Joinery: shoring/keel blocking, furniture, accommodation outfitting, plastic laminating
Industrial cleaning of tanks, ballast, fish holds and confined spaces after gas-freeing
Life-saving equipment: servicing of 4–35 person liferafts to SOLAS A.761(18), as representative of VIKING, DUARRY and SURVITEC (RFD, ZODIAC, DSB)

Facilities

Floating docks of 2,000 t (1972) and 10,000 t (1983)
Boilershop of 1,200 m² plus 500 m² platform; 9 m x 3 m CNC cutting bench with plasma, oxy-acetylene and engraving heads; 400 t permanent stock of Grade A plate with EN 10204 3.2 certification
Piping workshop 1,100 m²; mechanical workshop 1,038 m² with 300 m² parts store; joinery 1,590 m²; electrical workshop 400 m² over two levels with 5 t overhead crane; liferaft station 220 m² with some 30,000 items in stock
Paint plant: 5 UHP pumps, 15 blasting units, 10 paint pumps, 30 m² blasting cabin
Cleaning plant: high-pressure pumps to 500 bar, 250 m³ oily water and 350 m³ diesel storage
Waste sorting centre with colour-coded streams, recovering 75% of yard waste
On-site medical service, five secure studio apartments and equipped offices for shipowners
