Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) is a division of HII and the largest industrial employer in Virginia, with more than 26,000 employees. Founded in 1886, it is the sole U.S. designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two shipyards able to design and build nuclear-powered submarines, with a legacy of more than 800 ships designed, built, overhauled and repaired for the U.S. Navy and commercial customers. The yard is headquartered in Newport News, Virginia and also operates Charleston Operations in Goose Creek, South Carolina, where submarine and carrier modules and structures are built. NNS is currently building the Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers and provides fleet services for its ships worldwide.
