General Dynamics NASSCO-Norfolk is a Navy ship repair, maintenance and modernization yard in the Port of Hampton Roads, Virginia, formed in January 2015 from the former Metro Machine Corporation (founded 1963) and Earl Industries (founded 1984), both acquired by General Dynamics NASSCO between 2011 and 2012. The company holds a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) and an Agreement for Boat Repair (ABR) and performs complex, restricted and technical availabilities, including dry-docking, on U.S. Navy ships and craft of all classes. It operates the Ligon Street Yard in Norfolk and the Harper Avenue Yard in Portsmouth, Virginia, with facilities also noted in Bremerton, Washington, and a workforce of more than 1,000. Trade capabilities span structural and pipe fabrication, mechanical and electrical work, blast and paint, lagging, engineering and program management.

A member of the General Dynamics Marine Systems business unit, NASSCO-Norfolk was created in January 2015 by consolidating two long-standing Hampton Roads shipyards — the former Metro Machine (1963) and the former Earl Industries (1984) — acquired by San Diego-based General Dynamics NASSCO in 2011 and 2012. The combined company provides fleet maintenance, repair and modernization to government and commercial customers, citing experience on more than 450 ships. It holds a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) and an Agreement for Boat Repair (ABR) and employs a workforce of more than 1,000.

Services

  • Complex, restricted and technical availabilities, including dry dock availabilities and AIT integration
  • Structural, fabrication and pipe fitting: ASME and MIL-STD certified welding and NDE/NDT, plate cutting, sheet metal and vent duct fabrication, pipe bending to 6", fluid systems overhaul, air conditioning and refrigeration
  • Mechanical: diesel engine overhaul, pump and valve repair, condenser and heat exchanger retubing, propulsion equipment, elevators, winches and davits, rigging
  • Electrical: in-place cleaning and refurbishment of rotating equipment, fiber optic cable and connector work, design modification, troubleshooting and overhaul
  • Blast and paint, including underwater hulls, flight decks, well decks, tanks and non-skid application
  • Lagging and insulation for piping, bulkhead, ventilation, boiler and turbine exhaust systems
  • Engineering (2D/3D CAD, advance planning, NAVSEA and Carrier Planning Activity coordination) and program/project management

Facilities

  • Ligon Street Yard, Norfolk: three piers up to 1,117 ft by 40 ft, a 40,000 LT drydock, five tower cranes, and structural, machine, sheet metal, diesel, electrical, pipe, rigging and lagging shops
  • Harper Avenue Yard, Portsmouth: 60 acres at Pinners Point, one repair/modernization pier (Pier #1, 799 ft x 55 ft, 33–35 ft MLLW, 200-ton dolphin), one MARAD layberth pier, 50,000 sq ft of environmentally controlled shops
  • Two blast booths and one paint booth
  • Additional facilities in Bremerton, Washington
