Navantia UK has laid the keel of RFA Resurgent at its Appledore shipyard in North Devon, formally starting assembly of the first of three Fleet Solid Support ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. The milestone came with the lowering of the first block in Appledore’s dry dock and the placement of a commemorative coin beneath the section for good fortune.
Bristol Marine mechanic John Jerome is working on a repower project for the boat Relentless, replacing its old Volvo engines with a pair of new Nanni diesels. The job also includes changing the propellers from 3-blade to 4-blade, after Jerome spent about a day and a half preparing for the engine and transmission removal.
Bristol Marine said its Boothbay Harbor yard is restoring the historic steamboat Katahdin on Moosehead Lake in Greenville, Maine, and is in talks with the owners of Eros for bottom planking replacement. Ross Branch, a shipwright at Samples Shipyard, said the Katahdin work has included deck work, repowering and replacement of the wooden superstructure on her steel hull. He also said the Eros job is expected to start after Eleanor wraps up in March.
