SAAM Towage has christened the tugboat SAAM Petrel in Arica, Chile. It will support port operations there. The vessel has 80-tonne bollard pull and will assist with ship berthing and unberthing at the port.
IMO Tier III emissions standards are met by the tug, the first in SAAM’s Chilean fleet. They are designed to cut nitrogen oxide emissions. It was designed by Robert Allan and built by Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey, and forms part of SAAM Towage’s fleet renewal programme.
Local authorities, port representatives and SAAM employees attended the ceremony. Jenny Muñoz, a SAAM employee for 25 years, served as the vessel’s godmother.
“The christening reflected the company’s purpose of driving sustainable global trade,” Gómez said, as Hernán Gómez, CEO of SAAM, said the investment would help keep Chile connected to global markets through more efficient, reliable and environmentally responsible services.
